Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had left her family and she was taken care of by her mother, grandparents and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young toddler. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teens and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford was then able to apply for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she was already making her television debut in the 1991 season in the show Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
